MCGH Pharmacist Receives National Award For Research

Jackson - West Tennessee Healthcare is proud to announce Courtney Cockrill Guinn was selected as a recipient of the 2016 Andrew Foster Young Investigator Award by the Foundation for the Advancement of Cardiothoracic Surgical Care (FACTS Care) organization. Guinn is a clinical pharmacist at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital.

The Andrew Foster Young Investigator award honors the memory of Andrew H. Foster, MD, former chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery and Associate Professor of Surgery at The George Washington University Medical Center. Dr. Foster lost his battle with lymphoma in July 1999.  Guinn was selected for this prestigious honor based on her abstract titled “Evaluation of Ketorolac Safety and Efficacy in Post-Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting (CABG) Patients.” She completed research for her submission while serving as a pharmacy resident at Jackson-Madison County General Hospital. Award applicants must be 35 years or less and submit an abstract detailing research related to Cardiovascular-Thoracic Critical Care that is selected by the Research Conference Committee. The winner of the award was invited to present their research at the annual FACTS Care Conference in Washington D.C.

Guinn said the award is an example of the importance of collaboration within healthcare, and that this was the first time a professional other than a medical physician or resident was selected to receive this award. Collaboration between pharmacists, physicians, and other healthcare fields, both in research and patient care, is essential for optimal patient outcomes. Guinn said she was humbled and honored to receive the Andrew Foster Young Investigator Award and to have had the opportunity to share research with physicians, cardiothoracic surgeons, medical residents, nurses and other healthcare professionals.

Guinn, originally from McLemoresville, Tennessee obtained her doctorate of pharmacy at Union University in 2016. She resides in Medina with her husband Dan and they are expecting their first child in March of 2017.
