MEDICAL ECONOMICS: Strategic Planning: An Overview

Sharing the Plan of the Medical Group Management Association and American College of Medical Practice Executives

All of strategic planning starts with a vision and mission statement and conveys the values of an organization before you can move on with the goals. Vision is what and where we want to be in the distant future. Mission is the foundation or our existence and operations. Goals are timeless, unbounded statements that describe what the world will be like as a result of what we do.

I wanted to share with you what the joint boards of directors of the ACMPE and MGMA have defined as goals for the coming year. I do believe you can take the methodology we used in the plan to look at your own. But I also thought it was important you see the goals for 2010.

The vision of our organizations is “To be the recognized leader in defining and supporting the profession of medical group practice management.” The Mission is “To continually improve the performance of the medical group practice professional and the organizations they represent.”

Goal 1: Leadership Role in Transforming Healthcare; Improve quality of care, patient safety and operational efficiency by taking a leadership role in the transformation of the healthcare delivery system and group practice model. To achieve this we will identify and reduce unnecessary administrative complexity in medical practices. Improve patient safety in medical practices. And promote the study of effective healthcare delivery models and participate in the dissemination of best practices and innovations.

Goal 2: Influence Policy and Engage Members; Improve the efficiency and effectiveness of medical practice operations by influencing legislation, regulation, and private payor policies and by organizing and educating members to advocate issues and improve compliance. To achieve this we will increase member and state MGMA affiliate understanding and engagement in the legislative process. We will Align MGMA resources with other organizations to influence public and private policy.

Goal 3: Professionalism and Continuous Learning; Promote professionalism and inspire medical practice professionals to excel in their career by establishing certification standards for the profession and promoting continuous learning. To achieve this we will establish and refine standards for the medical practice management profession. Increase the member engagement in continuous and in ACMPE’s certification and fellowship programs. Increase recognition of the value of the medical practice professional by physicians and the broader healthcare community.

Goal 4: Deliver Value through Products and Service; Anticipate and respond to the changing needs of the medical practice professionals by providing timely, innovative and relevant solutions that deliver value. To achieve this we will improve product and service development with emphasis on reducing time-to-market and managing product life cycles. Expand the number of new and innovative product and service offerings.

Goal 5: Deliver Valuable Specialty Specific Resources; Provide timely resources and develop organizational relationships that enhance the value of MGMA to specialty practices. To achieve this we will increase the associations’ understandings of specialty specific needs and service offerings. Expand the number of new and innovative specialty specific offerings. We will develop mutually beneficial relationships.

I felt it would be helpful to share this overview of the ACMPE/MGMA Strategic Plan. We also developed a balanced scorecard for accountability and the ability for swift ad proactive adjustment to change. This was a great process and learning experience for me, and I believe you can use this to translate many of these goals to help your individual practice and benefit our medical community.
