Laura Bush Visits Memphis

Memphis Breast Surgeon, Dr. Christine Mroz and Former First Lady, Laura Bush
Former First Lady, Mrs. Laura W. Bush, spoke to a sold-out crowd at the Ninth Annual Methodist Healthcare Foundation Cancer Center Luncheon, Friday, November 12, 2010. Well known as a global literacy champion, she is also a staunch advocate for women’s health. Mrs. Bush is an active participant in campaigns to raise awareness of breast cancer and heart disease in the United States and around the world and plans to sustain her support for these causes as well as continuing her advocacy for women’s rights and education in Afghanistan.

Mrs. Bush delighted in telling the audience that Memphis is famous around the world. She confessed to a love for Memphis music and recalled the trip she and President Bush made to Memphis to fulfill Japanese Prime Minister Koizumi’s wish to see Graceland. They all donned gold Elvis Presley sunglasses and were greeted by Priscilla Presley and Lisa Marie before they took off for the Rendezvous for barbecue – Koizumi serenading them all the way with his rendition of “Love Me Tender.” And she spoke of the rescued Chilean miner who just participated in the New York City Marathon who ran 7 miles a day listening to Elvis songs on an iPod sent to him while trapped in the mines. He is being brought to Memphis for Elvis’ birthday and will be a guest at the Peabody.

A captivating speaker, Mrs. Bush told of her time in the White House and as First Lady, including stories of before and after September 11, 2001. She spoke of attending a Library of Congress festival on September 8 held at the National Mall in Washington, and recalled the carefree atmosphere. Then, she described, “We woke up on September 12th to a different life.” The Bush’s have both written their memoirs, hers entitled “Spoken from the Heart” and his recently released “Decision Points.”
Prior to Mrs. Bush’s speech, advanced oncology CNP and cancer survivor, Kim Hardin, spoke about her successful battle with breast cancer and acknowledged her Memphis breast surgeon, Dr. Christine Mroz, who received a robust applause from the audience.

As beneficiary of the event, the Methodist Healthcare Cancer Center uses a multidisciplinary team of medical professionals to meet the physical, emotional, spiritual and social challenges that come with a diagnosis of cancer and its subsequent treatment. The Cancer Center holds several accreditations, including: the Commission on Cancer of the American College of Surgeons, Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy and National Marrow Donor Program, American College of Radiology, Stereotactic Guided Biopsy and the Federal Drug Administration.
