Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare Announces Executive Changes

George Mayzell, M.D., MBA, FACP, currently chief medical officer at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown Hospital, will become chief patient care officer for the Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare system. Dr. Mayzell will be responsible for regulatory readiness and interdisciplinary clinical practice standardization. Prior to joining Methodist Dr. Mayzell served as senior medical director of patient management effectiveness for Shands HealthCare, a 9-hospital system integrated with the University of Florida College of Medicine. Steve Miller, M.D., vice president for Education and Research, will serve as interim chief medical officer at Methodist Le Bonheur Germantown in addition to his current role. Dr. Miller will also continue serving as the leader for Graduate Medical Education.
Michelle Collis has been named vice president for Patient- and Family-Centered Care (PFCC), a newly created position that will allow Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare to continue expanding its collaboration with patients and families as true partners. MLH is committed to improving our culture from its current technical orientation to one which better balances clinical best practices with the need for closer partnerships with patients and their families. Collis joined Methodist in 1984 and has served as vice president of Marketing & Communications since 1999.
In addition to continuing in her role as president and CEO of Le Bonheur, Meri Armour, MSN, MBA, will also serve a new role as senior nurse advisor for Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. In her new role, Armour will ensure the voice of nursing is a key part of system-wide priority setting and decision-making.

The West Clinic Awarded ACR Accreditation

MEMPHIS — The West Clinic has been awarded a three-year accreditation in Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI); Positron Emission Tomography/ Computed Tomography (PET/CT); and 64-slice Computed Tomography (CT) as the result of a recent survey by the American College of Radiology (ACR). Medtronic Names Francine Kaufman, M.D. To Key Executive Role In Diabetes Business

MINNEAPOLIS — Medtronic, Inc., (NYSE: MDT) recently announced that Francine Kaufman, M.D., has been named as vice president of Global Medical Affairs, for the Diabetes business. Reporting to Chris O'Connell, president of the Diabetes business and senior vice president at Medtronic, Dr. Kaufman will be a key architect of the company's global diabetes strategy, as well as a leading voice for multi‐disciplinary medical strategy across Medtronic. Dr. Kaufman will retain her University of Southern California (USC) academic title and remain on the board of Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA).
Dr. Kaufman is a Distinguished Professor of Pediatrics and Communications at the Keck School of Medicine and the Annenberg School of Communications of USC, and Head of the Center for Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism at CHLA. She has published more than 120 peer‐reviewed publications, as well as more than 200 articles and abstracts. Additionally, she is the author of more than 30 books or book chapters, including the best-selling book, "Diabesity."
A former president of the American Diabetes Association(r), Dr. Kaufman has served as a delegate to the World Health Organization and was elected to membership in the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Kaufman has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) since 1980 and is the current Chair of the National Diabetes Education Program, which is jointly sponsored by the NIH and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. She has consistently been included in the annual "Best Doctors in America" list, and was named Woman of Valor for 2003 by the American Diabetes Association in recognition of her outstanding dedication and commitment to diabetes. Dr. Kaufman is a graduate of Northwestern University and the Chicago Medical School.

Barbara H. Connolly Appointed Interim Dean for the College of Allied Health Sciences at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center

Recently, Hershel P. Wall, MD, chancellor for the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC), announced the appointment of Barbara H. Connolly, EdD, DPT, as interim dean for the UT College of Allied Health Sciences. The appointment becomes effective in December when the current dean, William R. Frey, PhD, retires.
The UT College of Allied Health Sciences includes the departments of Audiology & Speech Pathology, Cytotechnology, Dental Hygiene, Health Informatics and Information Management, Medical Technology, Occupational Therapy, and Physical Therapy. Dr. Connolly is a professor of physical therapy and has been chair of the Department of Physical Therapy for 21 years. She will continue in these roles while serving as interim dean.
Dr. Connolly was a founding member of the American Physical Therapy Association's (APTA) section of pediatrics and subsequently was president of the section. In 1985, she represented the APTA at the World Rehabilitation Fund (part of the World Health Organization). In 2007, she was elected president of the International Organization of Paediatric Physical Therapists. In recognition of her role as an outstanding mentor for professional and pre-professional students, Dr. Connolly received the 2001 Jeanne Fisher Distinguished Mentorship Award from APTA. As a result of her efforts to establish the first Minority Affairs and Recruitment Advisory Committee for the UTHSC College of Allied Health Sciences, the Physical Therapy Department received the 2000 APTA Diversity Award.
Dr. Frey was appointed dean of the college in January and had served as interim dean since May 2005. He has been a member of the UTHSC team for five years.

Memphis Gears Up For The 24th Annual "Bowlin' On The River" Bowl-A-Thon Benefiting Junior Achievement


Junior Achievement is now recruiting companies to participate in their annual "Bowlin' on the River" Bowl-A-Thon during the last two weekends in February (Feb. 21-22 and Feb. 28-Mar. 1). The annual event will take place at 5 bowling centers around Memphis. With a goal of raising $500,000, bowlers of all ages and skill levels will compete side-by-side, to raise funds for JA Programs. JA's purpose is to educate youth about financial literacy, economics and the importance of being workforce ready through its programs for area school children ranging from Kindergarten to 12th grade.
Junior Achievement has received overwhelming support from organizations such as Hilton Hotels Corporation (title sponsor), WHBQ FOX-13 (media sponsor), Soul Classics 103.5 FM and 98.9 KIM FM (radio sponsors) and American Airlines (airline sponsor). Campbell Clinic Physicians and Partners Aided 100 Homeless Memphians with the Gift of Shoes, Foot Care


Campbell Clinic Orthopaedics, Snells Orthotics and Prosthetics, and Red Wing Shoes again this year partnered with two national organizations, "Soles4Souls" and "Our Hearts to Your Soles" to provide homeless Memphians with the gift of foot care and new, properly fitting shoes. The team was able to treat and provide shoes for approximately 100 area homeless late last month.
The program, which began in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, was started by "Soles4Souls" based in Nashville and provides homeless individuals with foot care and proper fitting shoes. Later, Pittsburgh physician Scott Conti and his family launched their own support version of the program, "Our Hearts to Your Soles," and through Dr. Conti's relationship with Campbell Clinic, Memphis was brought on board as one of the 25 cities to be served by the national outreach event.
Campbell Clinic's David R. Richardson, M.D., Scott Hecox, M.D., Alex Coleman, M.D., and Angel Agus, cast technician, spent the day at the Memphis Union Mission on Nov. 25 providing foot exams, foot care and hygiene. Following foot care, Sammie Wicks, Snells Orthotics and Prosthetics, fit each person for the proper size and type of shoe. Each person served was given either a pair of tennis shoes, donated by Reebok, or work boots donated by Red Wing Shoes, depending on their need.

Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute Gains Center of Excellence Status

The Methodist University Hospital Transplant Institute in partnership with the University of Tennessee Health Science Center has gained Center of Excellence status for OptumHealth (previously United Resource Network) for both its adult liver and kidney transplant programs.
OptumHealth, one of the nation's largest health and wellness companies, provides health coverage for 58 million people. In order to receive the Center of Excellence designation, OptumHealth requires an extensive review of each specific program to ensure medical centers provide superior clinical outcomes through evidence-based medicine and best practices.
